Amish Quilts: The Dying Art of America

Within rural Pennsylvania, Amish quilting is a tradition that has been carried on for over a century. The Amish women make quilts, which is normally done in groups referred to as quilting bees. This \"bee\" provides the Amish women with the opportunity to gather within a social setting and the opportunity to be expressive and creative within a community that is known to frown upon fanciful possessions and pride.

Since the Amish quilts are functional creations that you can use within your home, the Amish women are allowed to create these truly amazing art pieces. All of the Amish women experiment with exquisite designs, contrasting colors, and a wide variety of different geometric shapes in order to create pure wonders that are known to please the eye and to bring sheer delight to all of those that appreciate all of the complexity of this particular construction.

Since all of the Amish people don\'t have any electricity the majority of the stitching involved in the Amish quilts is performed by hand or either with the help of a treadle machine. All of the quilt designs are pieced together from different pieces of fabric that are cut into a wide variety of different shapes and then they are sewn into what is going to become the top of the Amish quilt.

Once the top of the Amish quilt is complete, the batting and the bottom fabric are going to be added and then they are going to be quilted together with some intricate stitching which are known to form infinite numbers of patterns themselves. The Amish quilts are all bound along the edges. The entire quilt making process can take weeks or maybe even months to complete, it all depends on the number of quilters t hat are working together on the quilt as well as how much time can be dedicated to the project, which is going to depend on the season that the quilt is to be created.

Within the harvest time, the Amish women, in addition to all of their very busy schedules within the household of cooking three very large meals, raising the children, cleaning and making all of the family\'s clothing, all of these women are supposed to work right along side of the men in order to help with the harvest. However, today it appears that Amish quilting is soon going to be a thing of the past.

The majority of the young Amish women today are considering becoming a lot more involved within different areas of the Amish life. Overall, the Amish quilts are truly beautiful and they will add an elegant touch to anyone\'s home, however this is a tradition that seems to be a thing of the past. In the event that you are presented with the opportunity to purchase one, you better do it now.
